2010 Year End Deals

Reaching Out 2011

Throughout the year of 2011, Southern Savings and Deals, along with other local bloggers will be collecting items for different organizations. Each month, we will try to focus on a different organization, so that by the end of 2011, we will have helped at least 12 different organizations in our community. At the beginning of every month, I will post information about the organization that we will be helping for that month, along with a list of items that are needed. Hopefully we can all work together and donate a ton of items this year alone to these organizations.

For the month of January and February, we will be helping a local organization called Turning Point. Turning Point is located in Tuscaloosa, AL and is a center for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Turning Point offers temporary housing for these ladies and children, they have a 24 hour crisis hot line, and they offer counseling and support groups as well.

Turning Point is in need of the following items:

• Non-Perishable Grocery Items
• Ladies Personal Items (Shampoo, Conditioner, Soap, Tampons, Etc.)
• Bedding and Bath Items (Sheets, Towels, Etc.)
• **Travel Size Items will be great as well**
  
  We will be collecting these items until the 20th of February. Once items are collected, a picture of all items donated will be taken and posted on the website. Items will then be delivered to Turning Point at the end of February.

Publix Policy Change!!!!

Starting Jan. 1, 2011, Publix will only accept Target and other grocery store competitor coupons. They will no longer accept drug store coupons (Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS) or Dollar General and Family Dollar Coupons. For more information, contact your local Publix store. Thanks!

Christmas Frugal Ideas

Here are a few ideas that some of my readers emailed me a few weeks ago for some frugal Christmas gift ideas. I love all the ideas and thanks to everyone who emailed me!!

1. Soap Making (Thanks Amber!)

All you need is glycerin, some type of mold and a scent to give the soap fragrance. Food coloring can also be used to color the soap. Glycerin can be purchase at all craft stores and is melted in the microwave. Add scent and/or color and then pour into mold. Allow time for the soap to harden and pop out of the mold. Then you can package it in a creative way!

2. Pasta Baskets (Thanks Miranda!)

Buy spaghetti sauces and pasta with coupons. Put three jars of spaghetti sauce, three boxes of pasta in a basket with a can of parmesan cheese and maybe a dish towel or two.

3. Make Bread (Thanks Allie!)

Make your own bread and wrap either in a Christmas dish towel or put on a decorative plate.

Pay It Forward Challenge

One of my favorite blogs that read is Hip 2 Save. She has some of the best bargains on there and she also has weekly giveaways and videos that are fun to watch. Yesterday, she posted a video about a Pay it Forward Challenge. She went to Starbucks and gave them $300 to put toward orders that were being placed. How awesome is that!! I'm sure that so many people had a better day just by the little surprise that their coffee was already paid for that morning. Have you ever had this happen to you? I've had this happen twice at two different restaurants, where an anonymous person paid for my meal. It really made my day when it happened and I don't think I will ever forget about it. So, with the Holiday season approaching, I challenge you to pay it forward to others around you. Here are a few examples: Pay for someones order in a Drive Thur, Babysit for a family for free, prepare a dinner for an elderly couple, give a gift for no reason at all and I'm sure that there are many others.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or has any one had a Pay it Forward experience happen to them. Please share, we would all love to hear.

Homemade Christmas Gifts

I've had so many wonderful frugal Christmas ideas and I can't wait to share them all with you this week. My favorite ideas so far are all of the handmade Christmas gifts for friends and family members.

Here are a few of my favorite ideas:

--Decorate Plastic Soap Containers (I saw these at Christmas village for over $5 each and it would be so much cheaper to do these yourself)

-- Make Photo Calendars from Snap Fish or another online photo company. Most of these will have free codes until the end of December, so you could possible get a great deal on these!

-- Coupon Books: Make coupon books for your children or spouse. Include some of the following: Your Choice for Dinner Coupon, Movie Rental Coupon, A Day with Mom, Etc.

Hillcrest Publix

I've had a few emails over the past few days about people having problems using coupons at the Publix in Hillcrest. They did change the policy a few weeks ago, but it now seems that they are enforcing even more changes. I know it has got to be frustrating, but keep in mind that they do have the right to change their policy at any time. I would suggest contacting the corporate office and letting them know about this problem. Also, the Publix is Northport is great!!!! If you shop at that store, let them know that you appreciate the coupon policy and that thats the reason you shop there. It wouldnt even hurt if you wanted to call corporate and let them know how great the store in Northport is. In the mean time I will try to get the current policy at the one in Hillcrest. Let us know what you all think about this problem.

Humane Society of West Alabama
